The nation, our region, and our local community are struggling with a growing mental health crisis that needs well-qualified and competent mental health counselors more than ever. To meet the increasing demand for mental health counselors in our region and community, our graduate program in clinical mental health counseling is designed to prepare you to become an informed, caring, competent, and ethical practitioner, ready to enhance the overall well-being to a variety of clients. You will help them overcome their cognitive, behavioral, and emotional challenges in an individual, family, or group setting. Our courses are designed to foster professionalism, intellectual capacity, and respect for the dignity of all people and will cover human growth and development, counseling theories, group dynamics, cultural foundations, assessment and appraisal, couples and families, substance use, clinical instruction, and internships. 

Program Format/Delivery

Two-Year Program Meeting Year-Round

Our program is structured to allow students to complete 60 credit hours of coursework within two years composed of:

  • Professional Counseling Foundation Courses (24-credit hours)
  • Advanced Courses in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (12-credit hours)
  • Clinical Experience Requirements (15-credit hours)
  • Capstone Project (9-credit hours)

Small Cohorts that Support Working Professionals
Fifteen students move collectively through the coursework as a Community of Learners with faculty dedicated to mentoring and preparing students for success as mental health counselors. To support working professionals, classes are held in the late afternoon and early evening.

Le Moyne OT Students

The curriculum is designed to lead to eligibility to apply for a limited permit, provide preparation for the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam, and eventual full licensure as a mental health counselor in New York State. It should be noted that licensure in New York includes a background check. The licensure requirements can be found at: . Each student will be responsible for applying for licensure upon completion of the degree.

Le Moyne OT Students

Students complete 15 credits of clinical experience which includes 3 credits of practicum and 12 credits of internship to meet the clinical experience requirements and licensure standards for New York State. The practicum takes place over the course of one semester during the spring semester of the first year. The goal is to introduce students to the field and provide them with a foundation in counseling. The practicum consists of 100 hours. The internship takes place during the second year in both the fall and spring semesters with 300 internship hours required each semester for a total of 600 hours.
